Myths about vaccines

Myths about vaccines

Find out the truth about some of the myths surrounding vaccination.

Myth #1

"It's better to be immunized by the disease than by vaccination."

It's not true: the natural disease, although it also provides protection, can in some cases develop into serious complications and even death, even in a healthy child.

Myth #2

"Do vaccines cause autism?"

No. A few years ago, a study was published claiming that the measles/mumps/rubella vaccine (VASPR) caused autism. This study has been completely discredited. Because despite the coincidence between the age of diagnosis of the disease and the administration of the vaccines, other credible scientific studies followed which clearly demonstrated that there was no link between vaccination and autism.

Myth #3

"If vaccine-preventable diseases are practically eliminated and most children are vaccinated, why should I vaccinate my child?"

In addition to the advantages of herd immunity, some vaccine-preventable diseases, although rare in Portugal, exist in various parts of the world, including some European countries, and any unvaccinated person traveling to places where the disease still exists can be infected and consequently fall ill.
