Dandruff is a common problem, but there's no reason to live with this discomfort. There are several alternatives for eliminating the unpleasant white particles that mark the scalp.
DRY OR OILY...
When you think of dandruff, you almost always think of the little white particles that come off the scalp and fall onto your shoulders. But in fact, dandruff can have different characteristics depending on its origin and severity. Two types of dandruff can therefore be considered:
- Oily - this is a manifestation of seborrheic dermatitis, a disease with an unknown cause. This is an inflammatory phenomenon caused by excess oiliness due to the increased presence of certain fungi. This imbalance can be caused by hormonal changes or stress. The result is intense redness and itching of the scalp, with oily, yellowish scales that stick to the head.
- Dry - can be a milder form of oily dandruff or just a natural phenomenon of flaking. This flaking can result from faster renewal of the scalp cells, the use of aggressive products and blow-dryers, excessive friction, a diet low in minerals such as zinc and vitamins such as B-complex, as well as certain fats. Itching, dry, very fine and white particles that come off easily are the most common manifestations.
FOR HEALTHY HAIR
The presence of scales coming off the scalp is enough to cause discomfort and embarrassment. However, it is possible to control dandruff with treatments aimed at reducing oiliness and eliminating excess dead cells. Whatever the approach, persistence and patience are always required:
- Products that remove the larger scales that are adhering;
- Products that control fungal multiplication;
- Products that fight inflammation and itching.
In the form of shampoos and lotions, these are products that are applied to the scalp. In order for them to work best, essential steps must be taken:
- If your scalp is prone to oiliness, wash your hair daily to prevent the appearance or worsening of dandruff.
- Wash your hair with warm to cold water
- Wash your hair with a normal shampoo before applying the treatment product: this removes excess oil and scales and activates circulation
- Before applying the treatment product, separate the hair into strands so that the product is applied directly to the scalp.
- Avoid using hair dryers, foams and lacquers as they can damage or irritate the scalp, aggravating dandruff.
- Don't sleep with damp or wet hair
- Eat a diet rich in zinc and vitamin B: fish, seafood, vegetables such as lettuce, cabbage, carrots, tomatoes and fruits such as apricots are good foods.
GO TO THE DOCTOR IF...
If the dandruff doesn't improve after two weeks of treatment or if the symptoms worsen, with oily scales and signs of inflammation, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist to have the situation assessed and the necessary treatment instituted.
